School Report October 15, 2024 Wonderful things happening at Lago Lindo!
Teacher Report:
- Choir has started with 55 members. Rehearsals are Thursdays at 11:55am - Our plan is to sing at Remembrance Day, our own concerts, as well as “going on tour” to City Hall, Eaux Claires Extendicare and Schonsee LTC in December.
- Grade 5 hand chimes has started with 14 members. Practices are Tuesdays at 11:55am. - Grade 6 hand chimes has started with 15 members. Practices are Wednesdays at 11:55am. - Both hand chime groups will be performing at our own winter concerts.
October Assembly: Thank you to Cowboy Riley from Nebraska who came with his team of volunteers to share about his Career Pathway! Each volunteer read in classrooms, and Cowboy Riley visited classrooms to answer questions about his job. A super kick off to Read In Week.
Read In Week: Thank you to our community members for volunteering to read to a specific class and/or attend our Thursday Family Read In time. The school also had a school spirit day and the community wore shirts with words on them. We had Drop Everything and Read times, teacher exchanges, and Mrs. Howard, Mr. Bone and office staff reading in classes. New this year, we had a call in to win Quote of the Day for Division one and Division two. The phone lines were ringing with classes guessing the title of the book. Congratulations to students from Mrs. Neiderhaus, Mrs. Meldrum, Mrs. Melnychuk, Mrs. Sawh, Mrs. Sigardson, Miss Gemma, Mrs. Matchett and Mrs McDowell who all won $25.00 per class to the upcoming Book Fair.
Clubs: Running club is having their first race on October 15 at Lago Lindo School. Thank you to Mrs. Melnychuk and Ms. Charest for organizing this opportunity for our students and inviting other schools to join us. Thank you to the Dickensfield Soccer Team who encouraged students and volunteered on the running path to ensure safety for our students.
Student Leadership: Presentation from Mrs. McDowell and Mrs. Sigurdson: Grade 6’s are planning on attending Birch Bay for a legacy field trip at the end of the year and Grade 5’s are doing a horse literacy field trip as well. Prices for Birch Bay have increased significantly, going from $5577.60 last year to approximately $7800 due to increased enrollment. These costs do not include the transportation or the Grade 6 hotdog roast to culminate the day. We have been fundraising and are planning more. However, we wonder about the price increases and the impact on our family community. Discussions about the sustainability of this field trip and other fundraising ideas were welcomed and discussed.moving forward.
Principal Report:
School safety: Bylaw was at Lago Lindo School for two consecutive weeks to help our community understand parking around the school. They are providing warnings and tickets to the community who were illegally parked or stopping in the bus zone, etc.
Family Math Night: Approximately 80 people attended and filled the gym with Boxcars and One-eyed Jacks numeracy learning. Each family was gifted a resource package to continue the math games at home. Thank you to the PAC for funding this evening!
Schools that Listen: Two consultants from the BAM team (Bennett, Argyll and Metro Centre) will walk alongside us in the process of unpacking the wonderful information and input shared at our September 18, 2024 student, staff and community engagement full day session.
Thank you to our Edmonton Public Schools Diversity team who accepted our invitation and met with teachers on October 9, 2024. This day was an opportunity for individual teachers to ask specific class related questions to deepen our understanding and work towards the Division Priority #2 Advance action towards anti-racism and reconciliation
Thank you to Parents: Thank you to all parents who have volunteered to support the Hot Lunch fundraisers. This lunch option for students is greatly appreciated by our families.
Professional Development for staff:
- Differentiating for students’ multiple needs and levels in our classrooms - Language Consultant has been invited for two days to support teachers further learning. This PD offers teachers a one on one time to ask questions and learn about new resources to support our students.
- School Goals for 2024-2025. On October 11, 2024 staff organized and collaborated on our school focus related to the Division Priorities.
○ Build on outstanding learning opportunities for all students
○ Advance action towards anti-racism and reconciliation
○ Promote a comprehensive approach to student and staff well-being and mental health
- Staff are creating Inquiry Based Growth Plans in an area of interest and with North Central Catchment schools to deepen learning and understanding through a variety of topics and research.
School survey for input regarding the Winter Concert Times: One quarter to half of students do not return to school for the concert. With the change of times, of either 2:30pm or 5:00pm, we are hopeful more students will be able to participate. The survey closes on October 23, 2024 and is open for input from all families.
